It’s important for preschoolers to be able to recognize and identify colors. We often use colors as descriptors in our daily language so it makes sense for children to learn them early on.
One thing you can use to teach 4-year-olds about colors are books. Fortunately, there are plenty of color books for preschool that you can use for this purpose.

White Rabbit’s Color Book by Alan Baker – White Rabbit discovers secondary colors by dipping herself in tubs of primary color paints.
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Eric Carle – Here’s an Eric Carle classic that teaches children about animals and the colors they are with simple, repetitive text and creatively designed paper art.
The Mixed-Up Chameleon by Eric Carle – Chameleon tries to be different things in this clever story about colors.
Freight Train by Donald Crews – Children will learn about colors and train cars in this classic story.
Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert – Children will learn the names of both basic colors and flowers in this lovely book.
Color Dance by Ann Jonas – Do your children like to dance? Then they’ll love this color-blending book.
Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh – Three white mice get covered in red, yellow, and blue paint. Find out what happens when they mix their feet in puddles of different colored paint.
Bear Sees Colors by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman – Children can learn about colors and find things by color with the help of Bear and his little friend Mouse.
