One way you can avoid burnout is to make homeschooling fun for your family.
Fun can also make learning happen faster for your kids. That’s because laughter and joy relax the mind and make it more receptive to learning. They can also help to remove frustration and tension from learning situations.
Fortunately, there is no shortage of possiblities when it comes to making learning fun.
Below is a list of 50 things that you can do throughout your homeschool year to make homeschooling fun for your children (and you!). May it bless your family with many enjoyable days of learning.

- Tell jokes.
- Watch a fun educational movie. Schoolhouse Rock and The Magic School Bus were some of our favorites.
- Read a magazine. There are lots of children’s magazines available including National Geographic Kids, Ranger Rick, Zoobooks, and Ladybug to name a few.
- Read a funny book together. Some possibilities include Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Tuesday, and Dr. Seuss books.
- Tell riddles. I have a few riddles here.
- Watch a funny video on Youtube. Tim Hawkins is one of our favorites. Or there’s always all those silly videos of animal antics.
- Use educational puzzles. I have some printable puzzles here.
- Play educational games. I have printable games here.
- Go on a field trip.
- Dress up as a favorite character from a book, a historical figure, or someone from a painting.
- Celebrate an unusual holiday Dictionary Day or Pi Day.
- Have a thematic party. Possibilities include Mad Scientist, Dr. Seuss, or Famous Artists.
- Read a funny blog post. Pioneer Woman is one of my favorites.
- Sing a silly song. Veggie Tales has a good collection of these.
- Make something fun in the kitchen.
- Have an impromptu recess.
- Surprise your kids with a treat.
- Do something out of the ordinary. You could walk backwards to the local park or go on a sleigh ride. (Laughing all the way. Hey!)
- Start your day with something funny. A comic is one possibility.
- Do a totally fun science experiment. (Just don’t blow up the house.)
- Let your kids play fun educational apps.
- Let your kids play educational online games.
- Go to the park.
- Do a play, magic show, or Reader’s Theater performance.
- Try something new like digital art, photography, kayaking, or underwater basket weaving. (C’mon. You know you want to try it.)
- Let your kids do their school work in a wacky place.
- Tell a silly story to teach a concept.
- Use rhymes and chants.
- Play hand games and finger plays.

- Have free exploration time.
- Let your kids do projects.
- Create a scavenger hunt or treasure hunt.

- Come up with creative courses or mini-courses. Some possibilities include web design, publishing, digital arts and crafts, food decorating, build your own pc, or voice acting.

- Let your child teach you or a sibling something. It’s fun for them to be a teacher.

- Play music.
- Get involved in a homeschool group or other outside activity.
- Go to the library.
- Take silly pictures.
- Have a silly race.

- Hang up fun and/or humorous posters in your school room.
Of all these, I would have to say that education puzzles and games have been my favorite tools for making learning fun in our family. That’s probably because our family loves to play games.
