If you are teaching your kids safety, I have some safety mnemonics you can use to help them remember how to stay safe when crossing the street, in a fire, and in a survival situation.
These mnemonics are acronyms and well-known phrases, some of which I’m sure you’ll recognize.
Feel free to incorporate them into your safety curriculum or print this page and share it with your family.
Safety Mnemonics
Pedestrian Safety
When crossing the street, always remember to
stop, look and listen.
Also, be sure to
look left, look right, then left again
unless you live in London or another city where they drive on the right side of the street. Then you
look right, look left, then right again.
Fire Safety
If you catch on fire, you should
stop, drop and roll.
Need to use a fire extinguisher? Remember this acronym:
PASS
Pull the pin.
Aim the nozzle.
Squeeze the handles.
Sweep from side to side at the bottom of the flames.
And practice EDITH regularly.
What’s EDITH?
Exit
Drills
In
The
Home
Because practice makes perfect and helps you to be calm if a real disaster happens.
Survival Safety
If you get lost in a storm or the wilderness, or find yourself in some other survival situation, just
STOP
Stop
Take inventory
Orientate
Plan
Stop and think carefully about your situation.
Take inventory of what you have and can use. Look around you for useful items.
Orientate. Where’s north? South? East? West? What direction did you come from? What direction were you heading? Where might help come from?
Plan. Should you stay or go? What are some things you can do to survive? How can you make it easier for people to rescue you?
That’s it for the safety mnemonics that I have. Feel free to share these with others who can benefit from them.
